New Year Trips from Delhi: 12 Ideas for Snow, Parties and Quiet

Quick summary

The best New Year trips from Delhi are Manali or Shimla for snow and a big crowd, Mussoorie, Nainital or a Corbett resort for a lively 31 December night, Lansdowne, Chakrata or Mukteshwar for a quiet one, Jaipur, Alwar or Udaipur for Rajasthan heritage, and Rishikesh for a calm, alcohol-free start to the year. Whichever you pick, book early: 31 December is the most expensive and most crowded night of the year in every one of these places, and the roads out of Delhi are at their slowest on 30 and 31 December.

In 2026, 31 December falls on a Thursday and 1 January 2027 on a Friday, so a Thursday-to-Sunday break needs at most one day off. Below are 12 New Year trip ideas from Delhi, grouped by the kind of night you want, with the distance, how busy New Year's Eve gets, what to know about prices and booking, and the traffic and safety issues specific to that place.

For snow

1. Manali and Solang Valley (about 540 km)

The most likely place near Delhi to have snow on the ground at New Year, at Solang if not in town. It is also the most crowded: hotels typically report near-full occupancy for the last week of December, and the road to Solang and the Atal Tunnel backs up for hours. In past New Year seasons Kullu police have deployed extra personnel on the Manali–Atal Tunnel road, and after fresh snow they can stop cars at Nehru Kund or Solang. Rohtang Pass is closed in winter. Take an overnight Volvo or leave Delhi before 5 am, plan four nights so the drive does not eat the trip, and go to Solang at first light on 1 January. Stay in Old Manali or Vashisht for a walkable evening. See Manali in December, hotels in Manali and where to stay in Manali.

2. Shimla and Kufri (about 350–366 km)

The Ridge on New Year's Eve is Shimla's biggest night, with the Winter Carnival (24 December to 2 January last season) running stalls and performances on the Mall. Snow is possible but not likely in late December; Kufri and Narkanda have the better chance. Traffic is the issue: on 31 December 2023 more than 25,000 vehicles entered and left Shimla from the Solan side, against city parking for about 4,500, and police held cars at the Shoghi barrier and released them in batches. Park at your hotel, walk to the Ridge, and do not plan to drive on the evening of the 31st. Cars from outside Himachal pay a ₹170 entry tax at the border. See Shimla in December and hotels in Shimla.

For a lively night

3. Mussoorie (about 290 km)

The busiest hill town near Delhi on 31 December: the Mall Road was packed shoulder to shoulder on New Year's Eve 2025, and the Winterline Carnival usually runs in the last week of December. The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has made the drive about 5–6 hours, which brings even more day-trippers. Book a Mall-side or Library-end hotel you can walk from, or stay in Landour and walk down. Leave on 2 January, not the afternoon of the 1st, when the road down to Dehradun is at its slowest.

4. Nainital (about 300 km)

Busy but more manageable than Mussoorie. On peak days, police stop cars without reserved parking at outer parking points on the Haldwani, Kaladhungi and Bhowali roads and run shuttles into town; guests with a confirmed hotel booking are generally let through. Book a hotel with parking, and plan the drive across the plains for after sunrise because of fog on NH-9. Read Nainital in winter and where to stay in Nainital.

5. Jim Corbett (about 260 km)

For a party without the hill-town traffic, a Corbett resort near Ramnagar is the easiest answer: bonfires, live music and a gala dinner on the property, with safaris in the morning. Read the small print. Some large resorts make the 31 December gala dinner compulsory for all guests at an extra charge, and two-night minimum stays are common over New Year. Book safaris separately on the forest department's portal as early as possible; Dhikala stays sell out fast.

For a quiet New Year

6. Lansdowne (about 250 km)

The nearest hill station to Delhi and the calmest on 31 December: an Army cantonment with forest walks, Tip n Top and almost no nightlife. There are only a handful of good stays, so this is one quiet place where booking early matters more, not less. Good for couples and families who want a bonfire and an early night.

7. Chakrata (about 275 km)

A cantonment at 2,118 m, cold and quiet, with a real chance of the season's first snow at Lokhandi and Deoban in late December. Stays are simple; pick one with heating. Mobile signal is patchy and foreign nationals need permission to stay in the cantonment area.

8. Mukteshwar (about 350 km)

A ridge town about 50 km beyond Nainital, with wide Himalayan views on clear winter mornings and far smaller crowds. The usual route via Bhimtal and Bhowali skips Nainital town's New Year traffic. Plan three nights so the 8-hour drive is not squeezed. See the Nainital travel guide for the area.

For Rajasthan heritage

9. Alwar and Neemrana (about 120–165 km)

The shortest New Year trip on this list. Neemrana Fort Palace, a heritage hotel on NH-48 about 120 km out, fills early for New Year, and Alwar, with Bala Quila, Siliserh Lake and Sariska, is about 3.5 hours away. Warm afternoons, cold nights, and no hill driving. The risk is the drive back: do not head for Delhi after midnight on NH-48. See the Alwar travel guide.

10. Jaipur (about 280 km)

Jaipur's hotels, rooftops and heritage properties all run New Year's Eve events, and the city is big enough that the crowds spread out. December evenings are cool, around 10 °C. The expressway via Dausa makes it about 3.5 hours. Book hotels with a gala dinner included, or plan a quiet old-city evening and Amber Fort early on 1 January. See hotels in Jaipur and where to stay in Jaipur.

11. Udaipur (about 660 km)

The most popular Rajasthan New Year destination and the most expensive. For 27 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, Ixigo reported Udaipur bookings up 33% on the year before, and one lake-palace hotel charged ₹17,000 per person, before taxes, for its New Year's Eve gala dinner. Book two to three months ahead, take an overnight train or flight, and stay at least three nights. See hotels in Udaipur and where to stay in Udaipur.

For a spiritual start to the year

12. Rishikesh (about 240 km)

Liquor is not sold within Rishikesh's religious limits and the town is vegetarian, so New Year here means the Ganga aarti on the evening of the 31st, a sunrise at Kunjapuri on the 1st and a yoga session. Rafting runs in winter if you want an active day. It is busy but not overwhelming. See hotels in Rishikesh and where to stay in Rishikesh.

Think twice about Vrindavan. Around the last New Year, the Banke Bihari temple management asked devotees to avoid Vrindavan from 29 December to 5 January because of the crush, and advised against bringing children and older people. Go in the second week of January instead.

Plan by trip length

Two nights

  • Wednesday 30 December to Friday 1 January, or Thursday 31 December to Saturday 2 January.
  • Pick something within about 300 km: Alwar or Neemrana, Rishikesh, Lansdowne, Corbett, Jaipur, Mussoorie or Nainital.
  • Reach by mid-afternoon on the 31st, before town entry controls tighten. Leave late morning on the 2nd rather than on the 1st, when everyone else drives back.

Three to four nights

  • Thursday 31 December to Sunday 3 January, taking 1 January off if it is not a holiday for you, or Tuesday 29 December to Sunday 3 January with three days off.
  • Shimla with a day at Kufri or Narkanda; Nainital with Mukteshwar; Chakrata; Udaipur by train or flight.
  • Manali needs at least four nights plus the overnight journey, so leave on the evening of the 28th or 29th.

Booking timeline

  1. October to early November: book Manali, Shimla, Udaipur, Corbett resorts and Corbett safaris. Train tickets open 60 days before the journey, so 31 December trains open on 1 November.
  2. By mid-November: lock in hill-town hotels near the Mall, and read the policy on minimum stays, compulsory gala dinners and cancellation before you pay.
  3. Early December: get the car serviced, top up FASTag, and buy or rent snow chains if you are going above 2,000 m.
  4. The week before: check IMD forecasts and police advisories for snow closures, and confirm parking with your hotel.
  5. 31 December: arrive by afternoon and leave the car parked until the next day.

Traffic, police checks and safety on 31 December

  • Drunk-driving checks are everywhere. Delhi Traffic Police typically puts about 250 teams on drunk-driving checks on New Year's Eve, and hill-town police run their own checks at barriers. The first-offence penalty is a ₹10,000 fine and/or up to six months in jail. If anyone in the group is drinking, do not drive.
  • Entry controls: expect holding points at the Shoghi barrier for Shimla, outer parking and shuttles at Nainital, and restrictions beyond Nehru Kund and Solang in Manali after snow.
  • Connaught Place and India Gate: if you leave Delhi on the evening of the 31st, avoid central Delhi, where traffic is restricted from about 8 pm.
  • Fog and ice: fog on the plains at dawn and black ice on hill bends are the biggest risks. Drive in daylight only.
  • Bonfires and heaters: do not run charcoal or gas heaters in a closed room, and check that camps keep fires away from tents.
