2-Day Shangarh Itinerary from Delhi by Overnight Bus

Quick summary

This plan gives you two days in Shangarh, not two days door to door. Shangarh is about 500 km from Delhi, or 11 to 13 hours by road, so the plan uses an overnight bus each way. You leave Delhi on the evening before Day 1, spend Day 1 and most of Day 2 in the valley with one night in a village homestay, and take the overnight bus back on the evening of Day 2, reaching Delhi the next morning. That means three nights away from home: two on the bus and one in Shangarh. For background on the village, see the Shangarh destination guide.

Before you go

  • Season: March to June and October to November are the best months. Avoid the July to September monsoon, when hill roads are prone to landslides and trails turn slippery. Check the best time to visit Shangarh.
  • Book both overnight buses and a homestay with meals in advance.
  • Cash: The valley's ATMs are in Sainj, so withdraw what you need there.
  • Rules: Shangarh Meadow and Shangchul Mahadev Temple are sacred ground. Camping, alcohol, smoking, leather goods, weapons and loud behaviour are not allowed.

The night before Day 1: Delhi to Aut

Overnight buses towards Kullu and Manali leave ISBT Kashmiri Gate in the evening, roughly between 6 pm and 10.30 pm. They take 10 to 11 hours and stop at Aut, usually arriving between 6 and 8 am. Tell the conductor you are getting off at Aut.

Day 1: Into the valley, Pundrik Rishi Lake and the meadow at dusk

Early morning: Aut to Sainj

From Aut or Larji, local HRTC buses run up the Sainj valley to Sainj town, taking about 45 minutes. On the way you pass the Larji confluence, where the Sainj and Tirthan rivers meet the Beas. At Sainj, have breakfast and withdraw cash for your whole stay.

Mid-morning: Sainj to Shangarh

The last stretch is about 16 km of steep, single-lane road with tight hairpins. A shared or private taxi is the dependable option. The local bus runs only a couple of times a day, and services have been interrupted at times by road problems, so ask at Sainj. A private cab directly from Aut takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Late morning: Check in and learn the rules

Settle into your homestay and ask your hosts where the sacred part of the meadow begins, where shoes come off and what is not allowed. Ask them to arrange dinner, and siddu if you want to try it.

1.30 pm: Pundrik Rishi Lake

Start from Deohari village, just below Shangarh. The forest trail to the lake is roughly 3 to 4 km and takes 1.5 to 2 hours up. The small sacred pond is now largely covered in vegetation, and it is the walk through the deodar forest that makes the trip. Go with a local or get clear directions, stay quiet at the lake, and turn back in time to be down by about 5.30 pm.

Dusk: Shangarh Meadow and Shangchul Mahadev Temple

Walk the edge of Shangarh Meadow as the light fades, then visit Shangchul Mahadev Temple. Leave leather belts and wallets in your room. Visitors are generally not allowed inside the temple, so admire the kath-kuni woodwork from outside unless a caretaker invites you in, and ask before taking photographs. Local tradition holds that the village is a place of refuge under the deity's protection, which is why fights and raised voices have no place here.

Evening

Dinner at the homestay. Carry a torch, because the lanes are dark at night.

Day 2: Barshangarh Waterfall, Neuli and out

Dawn: Shangarh Meadow

Half an hour on the meadow's edge in the early light, then breakfast.

7.30 am: Barshangarh Waterfall

The waterfall is about 3 km from Shangarh. You can walk there from the village through the meadow and forest, allowing two to three hours for the round trip. Or drive to the parking area and walk the last 500 to 600 metres over boulders, about 10 to 15 minutes each way. Wear shoes with good grip, keep off wet rocks and do not swim in the monsoon. Aim to be back by about 10.30 am.

Noon: Check out and head down via Neuli and the GHNP Gate

If you have a taxi for the descent, detour to Neuli, about 3 km beyond the Ropa junction on the main Sainj valley road, where trails into the Great Himalayan National Park begin. You cannot enter the park without prior permission. Permits come from the Ropa range office (or the Shamshi head office or the Shairopa range office), and multi-day trekkers must hire certified guides and porters. On this short plan, simply see the valley head and keep the trek for a longer trip. If you are using shared transport, skip Neuli.

Afternoon: Sainj Town and the Valley Road

Have a late lunch in Sainj, then take a bus or taxi down to Aut.

Evening: Overnight bus to Delhi

Delhi-bound buses from Manali and Kullu pick up at Aut in the evening. Book in advance and confirm the exact pick-up time and point with the operator. You reach Delhi the next morning.

If you are driving

Do not drive through the night. Leave Delhi early, drive in daylight and break the journey at Mandi or near Aut. Then drive up to Shangarh on the morning of Day 1, follow the plan above, and come down on the afternoon of Day 2 to stop overnight near Mandi before the drive home. That makes it a four-day trip. Never attempt the Sainj to Shangarh road after dark on a first visit, and in the monsoon or after snow, check road conditions at Sainj before going up.

With more time

A second night lets you add Shenshar and its Manu Rishi temple and spend longer at Neuli. The 3-day Shangarh itinerary covers that. See the best places to visit in Shangarh for everything in the valley, the Shangarh trip cost guide for budgets, or adjust this plan in the trip planner.
