What Shimla is like in December: the weather, the real chances of snow, Christmas and New Year, and what to pack.
Quick summary
Shimla in December is cold, clear and festive, but it is usually not snowy. December is the month of sharp Himalayan views, Christmas at Christ Church and the New Year crowd on the Ridge. Snow in town is uncommon until late in the month, and most of Shimla's snowfall comes in January and February. Here is what to expect and how to plan.
Shimla weather in December
- Days: cold but often sunny, usually in single digits to around 10–12 °C.
- Nights: close to or below freezing.
- Snow: December averages only a few centimetres of snow over one or two days, usually in the last week. Kufri, about 500 m higher, has a better chance. For the full picture, see snowfall in Shimla.
- Views: some of the clearest of the year, with the snow peaks visible from Jakhu and the Ridge.
What to do in Shimla in December
- The Ridge and Christ Church: the church is the focus of Christmas in Shimla, and the Ridge is where the town gathers on New Year's Eve.
- Ice skating: the Shimla Ice Skating Club's open-air rink below the Mall runs sessions in winter when the ice holds. It depends on cold, clear nights, so sessions are not guaranteed every day.
- The toy train: the Kalka–Shimla Railway runs year-round, and a winter ride through the forests is one of the best things to do on a clear day.
- Jakhu Temple: walk or take the ropeway up for the view; go before noon for the clearest sky.
- Kufri and Mashobra: the nearest places to look for early snow, and pretty in frost even when dry.
- Viceregal Lodge: the old Viceroy's residence, now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, with guided tours (closed on Mondays).

Christmas and New Year in Shimla
From about 20 December to 2 January, Shimla is at its busiest of the winter. Hotels near the Mall fill up and prices rise, the road from Kalka slows on weekends, and parking in town is very hard. Book early, stay walkable to the Mall, and leave the car at the hotel. The first half of December is quiet and good value by comparison.
Getting there in December
The highway is open, but morning fog on NH-44 through Haryana and Punjab can be dense in December, so start a little later or drive slowly. On the hills, watch for ice in shaded bends early in the morning. Weekend queues at the Parwanoo barrier, where non-Himachal cars pay the state entry tax, are common. The Delhi to Shimla road guide has the route, tolls and stops, and you can also take a train to Kalka and the toy train up.
What to pack
- Thermals, a warm sweater and a windproof jacket
- Shoes with grip for icy lanes
- Gloves, a cap and a scarf for the evenings on the Ridge

A two-day December plan for Shimla
- Day 1: arrive by early afternoon, walk the Mall Road and the Ridge, visit Christ Church, and catch a skating session at the ice rink if it is running. Dinner near the Mall.
- Day 2: Jakhu Temple early for the clearest view, then the Viceregal Lodge (not on Mondays) before lunch, and Kufri or Mashobra in the afternoon. On a third day, ride the toy train down to Kalka on your way back.
Where to stay in December
Stay within walking distance of the Mall Road. In December, especially around Christmas and New Year, driving and parking in town is slow, and you will spend your evenings on the Ridge anyway. Hillside hotels on the Kufri and Mashobra side are quieter and better for snow, but you depend on taxis to get into town.
Shimla in December or January?
Choose December for clear views, Christmas and quieter, cheaper stays in the first half of the month. Choose January if snow matters most: it is the peak snow month in Shimla, though it is also colder and roads close more often.
