Weather, where to find snow, what is open and how to handle the Christmas and New Year rush in Manali in December.
Quick summary
Manali in December is cold, clear and usually the start of the snow season higher up the valley. Snow in Manali town itself is not guaranteed in December; Solang Valley and the road towards the Atal Tunnel are where most December visitors find it. This guide covers the weather, where to see snow, what is open, and how to handle the Christmas and New Year rush.
Manali weather in December
- Days: cold and often sunny, typically single digits to low teens °C in town.
- Nights: below freezing on most nights.
- Snow: Manali's snow season runs from December to February, with the heaviest snow usually in January. In December, snow is more likely at Solang Valley (about 2,500 m) than in Manali town (about 2,050 m).
- Daylight: short. Plan to be back in town before dark, around 5:30 pm.
Some Decembers are almost completely dry. If snow is the whole point, keep a day or two of slack in the plan and check the forecast the week before you leave.
Where to see snow in December
- Solang Valley: the most reliable snow near Manali in winter, with snow play, ropeway rides and, when the cover is deep enough, skiing lessons (more often in January and February).
- Atal Tunnel and Sissu: the road through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul is the other big snow trip. The tunnel is kept open in winter, but police close the road beyond Solang after heavy snow, so check the day's advisory before you set out.
- Rohtang Pass: closed to tourist vehicles in winter. Do not plan for it in December.
Things to do in Manali in December
- Old Manali and the Manu Temple: walkable lanes, cafés and orchard views, quieter than the Mall.
- Hadimba Temple: the wooden temple in the deodar forest, at its most atmospheric on a frosty morning.
- Vashisht: the village with natural hot springs, the best thing to do on a cold afternoon.
- Naggar Castle and the Roerich gallery: a half-day trip down the valley with views over the Beas.
- Jogini Falls: a short walk from Vashisht; the water may be partly frozen in a cold spell.

Christmas and New Year in Manali
The last ten days of December are the busiest of the winter. Hotel prices rise sharply, the Mall Road is packed, and the road to Solang backs up for hours on the busiest days. To make the most of it:
- Book stays early and pick Old Manali, Vashisht or a place on the left bank if you want quiet nights.
- Go to Solang or towards the Atal Tunnel early in the morning, before the queues build.
- If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of December are far calmer and cheaper.
Driving to Manali in December
The highway from Delhi is open in winter, and the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane road has made the drive faster, but the final stretch can be icy in the early morning. Avoid driving after dark, carry chains if you plan to go beyond Solang, and expect checks and closures after snowfall. Cars from outside Himachal pay the state entry tax at the border. The Delhi to Manali road guide has the route, tolls and stops.
What to pack
- Thermal inner layers, a fleece and a windproof outer layer
- Waterproof shoes with good grip; snow boots are available to rent at Solang
- Gloves, a warm cap and sunglasses for the glare off snow
- Moisturiser and lip balm; the air is very dry

A four-day December plan for Manali
- Day 1: drive from Delhi, leaving by 4–5 am to reach Manali before dark, or break the journey at Mandi.
- Day 2: Hadimba Temple in the morning frost, Old Manali and the Manu Temple, and an evening at Vashisht's hot springs.
- Day 3: Solang Valley early, then the Atal Tunnel to Sissu if the police advisory allows; back before sunset.
- Day 4: Naggar Castle on the way down the valley, then the drive back, ideally breaking it at Chandigarh or Mandi.
Keep one buffer day in December. If snow closes the road beyond Solang or the highway is slow, the extra day saves the trip.
Where to stay in December
- Old Manali and Vashisht: quieter, walkable and good for cafés, but the lanes are steep and icy in the mornings.
- Near the Mall: convenient for taxis to Solang and for food late in the evening.
- Solang and Palchan: closest to the snow, but you rely on the road and the area is very quiet at night.
Ask hotels about heating and hot water before you book; not every budget property is set up for sub-zero nights.
