Trip hub overview

Shangarh is a meadow with rules. It sits at about 2,200 metres on a shelf above the Sainj river in Kullu district, a flat green field the size of a few football pitches ringed by deodar and pine, with the Shangchul Mahadev temple at one edge, a village of slate-roofed houses at the other, and the peaks of the Great Himalayan National Park's buffer zone standing over everything. The meadow belongs to the deota, the village god, and the village enforces his terms: no shoes on the grass at the sacred end, no camping, no fires, no loud music, no quarrels, and, in a tradition that goes back centuries, sanctuary for anyone who reaches the temple, which even the police are said to respect.

It is about 500 km from Delhi, 11 to 12 hours on the Manali road as far as the Aut tunnel, then 20 km up the Sainj valley to Sainj town and another 12 km of narrow climbing road to the village. The Sainj is the less-visited twin of the Tirthan, the valley on the other side of the ridge that has become Himachal's best-known quiet place and is no longer quiet. Shangarh is where people who found Tirthan too busy went next, and it is starting to show: homestays have multiplied, weekend cars arrive from Chandigarh, and the meadow's rules are tested more than they used to be. It is still, on a weekday morning, one of the most peaceful places in the state.

What you do here is walk. The 8 km trail to the Barshangarh waterfall through forest and a couple of hamlets. The path to the Pundrik Rishi lake above Sainj, a sacred pond in a meadow with its own temple and its own rules. The forest roads to Shenshar and the GHNP gate at Neuli, where the park's core begins and treks to Shakti and beyond start with a permit. The village lanes, where the kath-kuni houses have carved doors and the temple's wood is a thousand years of craft. Or nothing, on a homestay balcony, with the meadow below and the deodars moving.

Shangarh suits people who want a Himachal village rather than a hill station, walkers, couples, anyone who has done Tirthan and wants the next valley, and motorcyclists who like the Sainj road's hairpins. It suits nobody who wants to camp on the grass with a speaker, and nobody on a long weekend in May who expects to have it to themselves.

My take: stay in a village homestay, not at a camp on the road. Learn the meadow's rules before you set foot on it, and keep them; I broke one within an hour of arriving and the village was right to stop me. Walk to Barshangarh early, sit in the temple courtyard at dusk, and go to Sainj for the lake on the second morning. Shangarh is what Tirthan was ten years ago. It will not stay that way if visitors treat the deota's field like a campsite.
