Trip hub overview

Nainital is a lake town in a bowl of forested hills. The town climbs the slopes around Naini Lake at about 1,938 metres, with the Mall Road running along one shore between Mallital at the north end and Tallital at the south. Above it rise the ridges of Naina Peak, Snow View and Ayarpatta, and from those ridges on a clear autumn or winter morning you can see a long line of Himalayan snow peaks to the north.

It is the closest major hill station to Delhi NCR in the Kumaon region, about 300 km and roughly 7 hours by road, and that is both its appeal and its problem. In May, June and on long weekends the climb from Kathgodam slows to a crawl, the Mall Road is packed, room rates jump and police stop tourist vehicles at the edge of town once parking fills. On an ordinary weekend in October, November, February or March the same town is calm and cool, with the colonial layer of churches, schools, the boat club and the Raj Bhawan still easy to see.

The way to enjoy Nainital is to treat the lake as the backdrop rather than the whole trip: walk up to the viewpoints early, spend one evening on the Mall, and use the town as a base for the quieter lakes of Bhimtal and Sattal, the birding forest along the Kilbury road to Pangot, and drives out towards Mukteshwar.

Where Is Nainital and Why Go?

Nainital sits in the outer Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, about 35 km uphill from the railhead at Kathgodam and the plains town of Haldwani. The hill station dates from 1841, when the first British houses went up by the lake, and it later became the summer seat of the governor of the United Provinces. Today it is the headquarters of Nainital district and the seat of the Uttarakhand High Court.

The town is built around the lake, about 1.4 km long and under half a kilometre wide. Mallital, the northern end, holds the Naina Devi temple, the Flats (an open ground by the water), the boat club and the bottom station of the ropeway to Snow View. Tallital, the southern end, has the bus stand and the road down to Kathgodam. The Mall Road links the two along the eastern shore; Thandi Sadak runs along the quieter western shore and is closed to vehicles.

The reasons to go are simple. You get a lake town with real walking above it: Snow View at about 2,270 m, Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) at about 2,292 m and Naina Peak, the highest point around the town at about 2,611 m. Within an hour's drive are Bhimtal (22 km), Sattal (23 km), Naukuchiatal (26 km), the Kainchi Dham ashram (17 km) and the forest road to Kilbury (12 km) and Pangot. Nainital suits families, couples on a first hill trip and anyone who wants Himalayan views without a proper trek. It suits people who want solitude much less in May, June and on long weekends.

Best Places to Visit in Nainital

The six places below are the core of a Nainital trip. Each is covered in detail, with time needed and practical tips, in the full guide to the best places to visit in Nainital.

  • Naini Lake – the town's centre: the Naina Devi temple at Mallital, boating from the prepaid booths at both ends, and the Mall Road and Thandi Sadak walks along the shores.
  • Snow View – the easiest viewpoint, 2.5 km from town by road, footpath or the aerial ropeway from Mallital.
  • Tiffin Top and Land's End – a forest walk on the Ayarpatta hill to Dorothy's Seat above the lake, with Land's End just beyond it looking down towards Khurpatal.
  • Naina Peak (China Peak) – the highest point around the town, about 6 km from Mallital, with the widest view of the snow peaks on a clear morning.
  • Pangot and Kilbury – a quiet ridge road through oak forest to a birding village about 15 km away.
  • Sattal – a cluster of linked lakes in forest, 23 km from town, quieter than Bhimtal.

Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal, Kainchi Dham, Mukteshwar (51 km) and the hillside zoo are worth adding if you have a third day.

What to Eat

Nainital is not a food destination, but the Kumaoni kitchen is worth seeking out. Look for a Kumaoni thali at the smaller restaurants off the Mall Road, which may include bhatt ki churkani (a black soybean curry), aloo ke gutke (spiced potatoes), madua (finger millet) roti and raita made with cucumber and mustard. Bal mithai, the brown fudge-like sweet coated in white sugar balls, and singori, a khoya sweet wrapped in a leaf, come from the wider Kumaon region and are sold in the town's sweet shops.

Around Mallital and Tallital you will find momos, bun tikki and roasted corn from stalls, plus reliable North Indian and Chinese at the long-running Mall Road restaurants and a growing number of cafes on the upper roads. Eat a proper breakfast before any early walk; there are only a few tea stalls on the ridges, and they keep seasonal hours.

How to Reach Nainital from Delhi

By road

The standard route is about 300 km: Delhi to Hapur, Garhmukteshwar, Gajraula, Moradabad and Rampur on NH9, then Rudrapur, Haldwani and Kathgodam on NH109, the old NH87 that continues up through Nainital to Bhowali and Almora. From Kathgodam the 35 km hill section climbs via Jeolikote and usually takes about an hour without peak traffic. Allow around 7 hours for the whole drive with a breakfast stop. Leave Delhi before 5 am to reach before the midday jams at Haldwani and on the hill road. Use the fuel calculator to estimate fuel cost for your car, and carry FASTag for the toll plazas on the plains.

On busy weekends and in the summer season, police stop tourist vehicles at parking points on the edge of town, chiefly the Rusi bypass on the Haldwani road and Narayan Nagar on the Kaladhungi road, and run shuttles into the centre. In recent seasons visitors with a confirmed hotel booking and parking at the hotel have generally been let through, and tourist two-wheelers have been turned back on some peak weekends. Book a stay with its own parking and check the current Nainital Police traffic advisory before you leave.

By train

Kathgodam, 35 km below Nainital, is the railhead. The two most useful trains from Delhi are:

  • 12040 Kathgodam Shatabdi – daily from New Delhi, leaving around 6.20 am and reaching Kathgodam around 11.55 am (chair car and executive class). The return, 12039, leaves Kathgodam around 3.20 pm and reaches New Delhi around 8.55 pm.
  • 15013 Ranikhet Express – overnight from Delhi Junction (Old Delhi), leaving around 10.05 pm and reaching Kathgodam around 5.05 am. The return, 15014, leaves Kathgodam around 8.35 pm and reaches Delhi around 4.10 am.

Timings change with new timetables, so confirm on NTES or IRCTC before booking. From Kathgodam, taxis, shared cabs and buses run up to Nainital; the climb takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

By bus

Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (Uttarakhand Roadways) and private operators run day and overnight buses from ISBT Anand Vihar to Nainital and Haldwani; UTC seats can be booked online or on its Pathik app. Overnight buses reach early in the morning. If a direct bus is full, take one to Haldwani and change to a local bus or shared taxi.

By air

Pantnagar is the nearest airport, about 70 km from Nainital, with a limited number of flights from Delhi. The drive from the airport takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. For most people starting in Delhi NCR, the train or the road is faster door to door.

Best Time to Visit Nainital

The best months are February, March, April, October and November. They give the best balance of clear views, pleasant weather and manageable crowds. See the best time to visit Nainital for a month-by-month view.

  • October and November – the best time for views. The monsoon has cleared the air, and the snow peaks are most often visible from Naina Peak and Snow View in the early morning. Days are mild and nights cold. Crowds rise again around Diwali week and long weekends.
  • February – cold, often clear and quiet. If you are lucky with timing, there may be snow on the ridges. Nights drop close to freezing, so choose a room with heating.
  • March and April – pleasant days, spring flowers on the ridges and moderate crowds until the summer school holidays begin. Haze builds through April, so peak views are less reliable than in autumn.
  • May and June – peak season. The weather is pleasant, but the town is at its most crowded, hotel rates are highest, the Mall Road is closed to vehicles in the evenings and vehicle entry controls are routine. Around the Kainchi Dham fair on 15 June, traffic on the Bhowali side is heavily restricted. Go only with a booking that includes parking.
  • July to September – monsoon. The hills are green and the town is quieter, but heavy rain brings landslides on hill roads, including the Kathgodam–Nainital road. In October 2021, extreme rain blocked the roads from Haldwani and Kaladhungi and flooded the lakefront. Check the weather and road status every day and keep a spare day.
  • December and January – the coldest months, with nights near or below freezing. Snow in town is occasional and unpredictable rather than reliable, and is most likely in January. The Christmas–New Year week brings big crowds and traffic plans similar to summer.

Suggested 2-Day Itinerary

Two days is enough for the town and one round of viewpoints:

  • Day 1 – leave Delhi NCR by 5 am, reach around lunchtime, then the Naina Devi temple, a boat on the lake and the Mall Road and Thandi Sadak in the evening.
  • Day 2 – an early walk to Tiffin Top and Land's End (or Naina Peak if you are fit and the weather is clear), check out, lunch at Sattal and back to Delhi via Bhimtal and Haldwani by late evening.

The hour-by-hour version, with train and long-weekend variations, is in the 2-day Nainital itinerary. To build your own plan, use the trip planner.

Nainital Trip Budget

A mid-range 3-day, 2-night trip from Delhi NCR costs about ₹9,000 per person. That assumes four people sharing a car, a double room on the upper roads and meals in mid-range restaurants. A train-and-guesthouse trip can come in around ₹4,000–6,000. A Shatabdi trip with an upmarket stay and a hired car can cost ₹20,000–28,000. Room rates are the item that changes most with the season: May, June, Diwali, Christmas–New Year and long weekends cost far more than an ordinary November weekend. See the full Nainital trip cost breakdown, or run your own numbers in the trip budget calculator.

Where to Stay

  • Mallital and the Mall Road – closest to the lake, the temple, the ropeway and restaurants. It is convenient for a first off-season trip, but noisy and congested in season, and many lakefront hotels have little or no parking.
  • Tallital – near the bus stand and the road down to Kathgodam. It is practical for bus and train travellers and for an early departure.
  • Ayarpatta and the upper roads – quieter hillside cottages, homestays and heritage-style properties above the lake. Tiffin Top is within walking distance. Expect steep lanes.
  • Pangot and the Kilbury road – homestays and small lodges in the forest about 15 km out. Stay here for birding, quiet nights and easy dawn access to the ridges, and drive into town when you want it.
  • Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal – lake resorts and homestays 22–26 km away. They are a little lower and warmer, and a good base for families on peak weekends, when staying in Nainital itself is a hassle.

Whatever the area, in peak season ask the property for written confirmation of parking. It makes a real difference at the entry checkpoints.

Practical Tips

  • Vehicle entry and parking: on peak days, expect checkpoints at the Rusi bypass and Narayan Nagar, with shuttles into town if you do not have a booking that includes parking. Park once and walk; the Mall Road is closed to vehicles on May–June evenings and Thandi Sadak is always pedestrian-only.
  • Forest entry fees: the forest department introduced a ₹50 per person fee for Tiffin Top and China (Naina) Peak in 2024. Check the current rate at the gate.
  • Ropeway: the Snow View ropeway runs roughly 10 am to 4 pm (round trip ₹190 adult, ₹120 child per the district listing). It pauses for bad weather and maintenance, so walking or driving up is the backup.
  • Mountain roads: the Kathgodam–Nainital road is a well-used two-lane hill road, but avoid driving it at night in the monsoon or in winter fog. In winter, shaded bends on the ridge roads to Kilbury and Pangot can ice over; drive slowly in daylight.
  • Walks: stick to the main trails to the viewpoints, start early, carry water and a warm layer, and turn back if cloud or rain comes in. Hire ponies only from the recognised stands.
  • Kainchi Dham: the ashram is crowded on weekends and very crowded around the 15 June foundation day. In 2026 private vehicles were barred from driving to the temple from 13 to 16 June and pilgrims used shuttles from designated parking.
  • Eco Cave Gardens: the small cave garden at Mallital is a short stop for children. Listings report daytime opening with no weekly closure, but there is no official timetable, so check the hours locally.
  • Monkeys: monkeys around the Mall and viewpoints snatch food and bags; keep snacks out of sight.
  • Cash and network: the town has ATMs and mobile coverage, and UPI is widely used. Carry some cash for Pangot and the smaller lake villages in case payments or signal fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Nainital from Delhi and how long does it take?

About 300 km by road via Moradabad, Rampur, Haldwani and Kathgodam, which takes roughly 7 hours with a stop. By train, the Kathgodam Shatabdi takes about 5.5 hours to Kathgodam, followed by a 35 km road climb.

What is the best month to visit Nainital?

October and November for the clearest mountain views. February, March and April are also good. Avoid May, June and long weekends if you dislike crowds, and treat the July–September monsoon with caution because of landslides.

Can you drive into Nainital on a weekend?

Usually yes in the off-season. On peak days, police stop tourist vehicles at the Rusi bypass and Narayan Nagar and run shuttles into town; guests with a confirmed booking and hotel parking have generally been allowed through. Check the latest police advisory before you go.

Does it snow in Nainital?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Snow is most likely in January and sometimes in February, and the higher ridges get it more often than the lakefront. Do not plan a trip around guaranteed snow.

How many days are enough for Nainital?

Two days covers the lake and one round of viewpoints. Three days lets you add Pangot or Sattal, Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal, Kainchi Dham or Mukteshwar without rushing.

Which is better for a quiet stay: Nainital, Bhimtal or Pangot?

Pangot is the quietest, a forest village built around birding. Bhimtal and Sattal are calmer than Nainital and easier to drive into on busy weekends. Nainital town is best for first-timers who want the lake, the temple and the Mall within walking distance.

How do you get to Kainchi Dham from Nainital?

The ashram is about 17 km away on the road to Almora, via Bhowali. Go early on a weekday. Around the 15 June fair, private vehicles are stopped at designated parking and shuttles run to the temple.
