Ten towns and valleys within a day's drive of Delhi that see a fraction of the usual crowds, with distances, best months and why each is worth the effort.
Quick summary
Offbeat does not have to mean remote. Within a day's drive of Delhi there are towns and valleys that see a fraction of the crowds of Shimla, Mussoorie or Jaipur, either because the road is a little harder or because they simply have not been discovered by tour packages. These 10 offbeat places near Delhi are grouped by how far they are, with what makes each one worth the extra effort.

Closer to Delhi
1. Alwar and Sariska
Rajasthan's most underrated weekend: the hilltop Bala Quila, the City Palace, Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri, the Siliserh lake palace and a safari in Sariska Tiger Reserve, all about 160 km from Delhi. It sees a fraction of Jaipur's visitors. See the Alwar travel guide.
2. Lansdowne
An Army cantonment in the Garhwal hills, kept clean and quiet, with forest walks and little else. It is the nearest hill station to Delhi that still feels calm on a weekend.
3. Chakrata
A cantonment at 2,118 m beyond Dehradun, surrounded by deodar forest, waterfalls and Jaunsari villages that keep their own customs. Facilities are basic and foreign nationals need permission to stay in the cantonment, which keeps the crowds away.
Kumaon and Garhwal ridges
4. Kanatal
A meadow-and-forest hamlet at 2,590 m on the ridge above Tehri Lake, best for camping and the walk up to Surkanda Devi. It is close to Mussoorie but has none of its crowds.
5. Mukteshwar
A small ridge town about 50 km beyond Nainital, with some of the widest Himalayan views of any place near Delhi on clear days, and quiet orchards and forest walks.
6. Pangot
A forest village about 15 km from Nainital, known for birdwatching and stays in the oak and rhododendron forest. It is the quiet side of a Nainital trip; see the Nainital travel guide.
Worth a long weekend
7. Bundi
A blue old town under a hill palace of painted rooms, with some of the finest stepwells in Rajasthan and very few tourists, about 470 km from Delhi. Rudyard Kipling wrote about it; tour buses mostly skip it. See the Bundi travel guide and best places to visit in Bundi.
8. Shangarh
A sacred meadow at 2,200 m in the Sainj valley, with a kath-kuni temple, deodar forest, homestays and no town to speak of. It sits next to the far busier Tirthan valley and is the gateway to the Great Himalayan National Park. See the Shangarh travel guide.
9. Bir Billing
India's paragliding capital, with a 2,400 m launch at Billing and the landing at Bir, a Tibetan village with monasteries, cafés and tea gardens. Outside the flying season it is a slow mountain village.
10. Chopta
Alpine meadows at about 2,700 m and the start of the walk to Tungnath, among the highest Shiva temples in the world, and on to Chandrashila summit. It is the best two-night Himalayan trek within reach of Delhi; the road is long and hotels are basic.
Tips for offbeat trips
- Fewer visitors means fewer facilities. Carry cash, fill fuel in the last big town and download offline maps.
- Book stays in advance even off-season; there are only a handful of good places in each.
- Mobile signal is patchy in Chakrata, Chopta and the Sainj valley.
- Drive hill roads in daylight, and check monsoon road status from July to September.
- Use the trip planner to turn any of these into a day-by-day plan, or browse weekend trips from Delhi for more ideas.
