Scoring methodology

How HarshOnRoads destination scores work

Every destination in our database has eleven underlying scores from 0 to 10. The HarshOnRoads team curates these values. We combine them with fixed weights to produce a transparent overall score from 0 to 100 — no AI is used at calculation time.

How it works

  1. Each destination has eleven underlying scores stored in PostgreSQL, each rated from 0 to 10 by an administrator.
  2. Scores are not generated by AI at runtime — they are curated editorial values reviewed and updated by the HarshOnRoads team.
  3. An overall score from 0 to 100 is calculated as a weighted average: each dimension score is converted to a 0–100 scale, multiplied by its weight, and summed.
  4. Default weights favour weekend suitability, budget friendliness, bike suitability, accessibility, and offbeat factor slightly more than the remaining dimensions.
  5. Changing a dimension score or weight immediately changes the overall score using the same deterministic formula.

The formula

Overall score = Weekend suitability × 12% + Budget friendliness × 10% + Nature × 8% + Heritage × 8% + Adventure × 8% + Solo travel × 8% + Couple travel × 8% + Family travel × 8% + Bike suitability × 10% + Accessibility × 10% + Offbeat factor × 10% (each dimension is scaled from 0–10 to 0–100 before weighting).

Example: if Weekend suitability is 8/10 with a 12% weight, it contributes 9.6 points to the overall score (80 × 0.12).

What this score is not

  • It is not generated by AI from reviews or social media.
  • It is not a live popularity ranking that changes hourly.
  • It does not replace your own preferences — use it as one data point alongside budget, distance, and trip feasibility tools.
