Best Places to Visit in Nainital: Lake, Viewpoints and Lakes Nearby

Quick summary

Most visitors to Nainital see the lake and the Mall Road and leave. Some of the best places to visit in Nainital are above the town on the forested ridges, and out along the roads to Kilbury and the lakes below. Here are the top picks, followed by what each place is, why it is worth your time, how long to allow and a practical tip.

Top picks if you have one weekend:

  • Best view: Naina Peak (China Peak) on a clear morning
  • Best easy walk: Tiffin Top and Land's End
  • Best for families: Naini Lake and Snow View
  • Best escape from the crowds: Pangot and Kilbury, or Sattal

For travel, timing and stay advice, see the Nainital destination guide.

1. Naini Lake

What it is: the lake at the heart of the town, about 1.4 km long, with Mallital at the north end and Tallital at the south. The Naina Devi temple, one of the Shakti Peeths and the source of the town's name, stands at the Mallital end next to the Flats and the boat club.

Why go: the lake is the reason Nainital exists. Row or pedal boats leave from prepaid booths at both ends, and the boat club runs sailing boats. The Mall Road follows one shore. Thandi Sadak follows the other and is closed to vehicles, which makes it the better walk.

Time needed: 2–3 hours for the temple, a boat ride and a loop of the shore.

Tip: pay only the rate shown on the official prepaid board. Go late afternoon on a weekday; in May and June the Mall Road closes to vehicles in the evenings and fills with walkers.

2. Snow View

What it is: a ridge-top viewpoint at about 2,270 metres, 2.5 km above Mallital, reached by road, a footpath or the aerial ropeway from near the Flats.

Why go: it is the easiest place in town to see the snow peaks to the north on a clear day, with the lake directly below. The top has a small temple, tea and snack stalls.

Time needed: 1.5–2 hours including the ropeway queue; longer if you walk up.

Tip: the district lists ropeway hours as 10 am to 4 pm with a round trip at ₹190 for adults and ₹120 for children aged 3–12. The ropeway pauses for weather and maintenance, so check at the Mallital station. Haze often hides the peaks by late morning in spring and summer.

3. Tiffin Top and Land's End

What it is: Tiffin Top, also called Dorothy's Seat, is a rocky viewpoint at about 2,292 metres on the Ayarpatta hill, 4 km from town. It takes its name from a memorial seat to Dorothy Kellet, an English painter. Land's End lies a little further along the same ridge.

Why go: it is the best easy walk around Nainital. A forest path climbs to a seat above the lake and town, and Land's End looks the other way, down towards the Khurpatal valley and the plains.

Time needed: 2.5–3 hours for both, at an easy pace from the Ayarpatta road.

Tip: the forest department introduced a ₹50 per person entry fee for Tiffin Top in 2024; check the current rate at the gate. Ponies are available, but the walk is manageable for most families. Start in the morning and carry water.

4. Naina Peak (China Peak)

What it is: the highest point around Nainital at about 2,611 metres, roughly 6 km from town.

Why go: on a clear morning, especially in October and November, it gives the widest view of the snow peaks you can get without a proper trek, with the lake far below.

Time needed: half a day on foot, with roughly 2–3 hours up depending on route and fitness. Ponies can be hired from Snow View or Barapathar.

Tip: this is a real forest climb. Go with company, start early, carry water and a warm layer and turn back if cloud closes in. The ₹50 forest entry fee introduced in 2024 applies here as well.

5. Pangot and Kilbury

What it is: the Kilbury road leaves Nainital and runs along a forested ridge to Kilbury (about 12 km, with a forest rest house) and the village of Pangot, about 15 km from town.

Why go: this is the quiet side of Nainital: oak and rhododendron forest, little traffic and one of the best-known birding areas in Kumaon. Species recorded here include the cheer pheasant and Himalayan griffon.

Time needed: a morning for a drive and short walks; a night or two if you are birding.

Tip: go at dawn for birds and clear views and drive slowly; the road is narrow and winding. Birders should hire a local guide through their stay. Carry some cash in case payments or signal are patchy.

6. Sattal

What it is: a cluster of linked lakes, among them Nal Damayanti Tal, Panna (Garud) Tal and the Ram, Lakshman and Sita lakes, set in oak forest at about 1,370 metres, 23 km from Nainital via Bhowali.

Why go: it is calmer than Bhimtal and Naini Lake, with boating and kayaking from local operators, forest paths between the lakes and good birding in winter.

Time needed: 2–3 hours, or a half day with lunch.

Tip: it fits well on the way home. Go Nainital, Bhowali, Sattal, then Bhimtal and down to Kathgodam, so you are not backtracking. Only use life jackets and operators at the main lake points.

Also worth adding with more time

  • Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal (22 km and 26 km) – a larger lake and a smaller, quieter one, with boating; paragliding operators work around Naukuchiatal.
  • Kainchi Dham (17 km on the Almora road) – the Neem Karoli Baba ashram. Go early on a weekday; around the 15 June fair, private vehicles are stopped at parking points and shuttles run to the temple.
  • Mukteshwar (51 km, about 2,286 m) – a ridge village with wider mountain views, best with a night or a long day.
  • Eco Cave Gardens (Mallital) – a short stop for children with a set of small rock caves. Third-party listings report daytime hours and no weekly closure, but there is no official timetable, so check at the gate.
  • The zoo – the Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo above Tallital has Himalayan species. The district listing gives Monday and national holidays as closed days, but other sources differ, so confirm before going.
