A two-day Nainital plan from Delhi NCR with realistic timings: arrive by lunch, ropeway, temple and boating on Day 1, Tiffin Top and Sattal on Day 2, plus train and peak-season versions.
Quick summary
This 2-day Nainital itinerary starts and ends in Delhi NCR and assumes you drive, with a train version further down. The road is about 300 km and takes roughly 7 hours each way, so it is a full weekend: arrive by lunch on Day 1, see the lake in the afternoon and evening, do one viewpoint walk early on Day 2, and stop at Sattal on the way down. Timings are built around the ropeway hours, daylight and the drive, so nothing has you walking forest trails after dark.
Sunset in Nainital falls at roughly 5.15–6 pm from October to February and 6–6.45 pm in March and April (approximate; check on the day). Shift the evening slots to match.
Day 1: Delhi NCR to Nainital, the lake and the Mall
5.00 am: leave Delhi NCR
Head out on NH9 via Hapur, Garhmukteshwar, Gajraula and Moradabad, then Rampur, Rudrapur and Haldwani on NH109. An early start beats the truck traffic and the midday congestion in Haldwani. Take a breakfast stop of about 30–45 minutes on the highway. In winter, allow extra time for fog on the plains.
11.00 am: Kathgodam and the climb
From Kathgodam the 35 km hill road climbs via Jeolikote and usually takes about an hour. On peak weekends, police may stop vehicles at the Rusi bypass and send them into town by shuttle; a confirmed booking with hotel parking normally gets you through. Keep the confirmation handy.
12.00–12.30 pm: check in and lunch
Park at your hotel and leave the car there for the rest of the day; everything on today's plan is walkable. Have lunch near Mallital, ideally a Kumaoni thali.
1.30 pm: Snow View by ropeway
Walk to the ropeway station near the Flats at Mallital. The district lists hours as 10 am to 4 pm, so go up early in the afternoon. Spend 45 minutes to an hour at the top for the view over the lake and, if the air is clear, the snow peaks. If the ropeway is shut for weather or maintenance, take a taxi up the road instead, or skip it; the walk up and down is better left for a morning.
3.30 pm: Naina Devi temple and the Flats
Back at Mallital, visit the Naina Devi temple on the lake shore, one of the Shakti Peeths. Then walk past the Flats and the boat club.
4.15 pm: boating on Naini Lake
Hire a rowing or pedal boat from the prepaid booth for 30–45 minutes, and pay only the rate on the official board. Late afternoon light on the water is the best of the day, and the boats are less crowded than at midday.
5.00 pm: Thandi Sadak and the Mall Road at dusk
Walk along the vehicle-free Thandi Sadak on the western shore, then back along the Mall Road as the lights come on around the lake. In May and June the Mall Road is closed to vehicles in the evenings, which makes the walk easier but busier.
7.30 pm: dinner and an early night
Eat on the Mall or near your hotel. Tomorrow starts early.
Day 2: a ridge walk, Sattal and home
7.00 am: breakfast
Eat properly; there are only a few tea stalls on the ridge.
7.45 am: Tiffin Top and Land's End
Take a taxi or drive to the Ayarpatta trailhead, then walk the forest path to Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat, about 2,292 m) and on to Land's End. There is a ₹50 forest entry fee, introduced in 2024. Morning is the best time for clear air. Allow 2.5–3 hours in all, back by about 10.45 am.
Fitter alternative: Naina Peak (China Peak, about 2,611 m), the highest point around the town, roughly 6 km away. If you choose it, start at first light, allow half a day and push check-out later. Go only in clear weather and never alone.
11.15 am: check out and drive to Sattal
Leave Nainital via Bhowali rather than going back down the Jeolikote road. Sattal is 23 km away, roughly an hour on forest roads.
12.15 pm: Sattal
Have lunch by the lakes, take a short boat or kayak ride from the operators at the main lake, and walk the path between the lakes. Allow about 2 hours.
2.30 pm: Bhimtal and down to Kathgodam
Drive past Bhimtal, and Naukuchiatal if you want a quick look, then down to Kathgodam and Haldwani. You should be on the plains by around 4 pm.
4.00–10.30 pm: drive back to Delhi NCR
The return run from Haldwani takes about 6 hours plus a dinner stop around Moradabad or Gajraula. Expect to reach Delhi NCR between 10 and 11 pm. Sunday evening traffic near Delhi can add an hour.
If you are coming by train
- Overnight: 15013 Ranikhet Express leaves Delhi Junction around 10.05 pm and reaches Kathgodam around 5.05 am. Take a taxi or shared cab up, have breakfast in Nainital and start Day 1 with Tiffin Top in the morning. Do Snow View, the temple and boating in the afternoon. On Day 2, see Sattal and Bhimtal on the way down and catch 15014 from Kathgodam around 8.35 pm (into Delhi around 4.10 am).
- Shatabdi: 12040 leaves New Delhi around 6.20 am and reaches Kathgodam around 11.55 am. Allow 1–1.5 hours to Nainital, then follow Day 1 from 1.30 pm. The return 12039 leaves Kathgodam around 3.20 pm, so on Day 2 do the morning walk, then leave Nainital by noon and skip Sattal.
Train times change with new timetables; check NTES or IRCTC before booking.
Long-weekend and peak-season adjustments
- Book a hotel with its own parking, or stay at Bhimtal or Sattal and come into Nainital by shuttle or taxi.
- Arrive before 10 am or after dark; the hill road and town entry are slowest from late morning to late afternoon.
- Do the ropeway as soon as it opens, before the queues build.
- Avoid the Bhowali–Kainchi road around the Kainchi Dham fair on 15 June, when private vehicles are stopped and shuttles run.
- In the July–September monsoon, check road status before leaving and do not drive the hill road at night.
The 3-day version
Add a night at Pangot or on the Kilbury road. Spend the extra morning birding with a local guide or walking up Naina Peak, and add Kainchi Dham (early, on a weekday) or a long drive to Mukteshwar, 51 km away.
