McLeod Ganj season by season

From Harsh's McLeod Ganj travel guide.

March to June and October to November are the best months, with October and November the clearest. The best time to visit McLeod Ganj page has more detail.

March to April brings rhododendron bloom in the forest above Dharamkot, cool days, cold nights and clear mountain views. Triund reopens as the winter snow melts. May to June is peak season: warm days, the whole ridge open, Triund at its busiest, and the highest room rates and traffic. Pre-monsoon showers start in the second half of June, and the monsoon normally reaches Kangra around the last week of June.

July to mid-September is the monsoon, and Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in Himachal. Landslides have repeatedly cut the Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj road near Forsyth Ganj (most recently in the August 2025 rains), trails are slippery and leech-prone, and the Dhauladhar disappears into cloud for days. Bhagsu waterfall is at full force, but this is not the season for Triund or for a first visit.

Late September to November is the best time: washed air, sharp views of the range, comfortable days and cold nights, and thinner crowds after Diwali. December to February is cold, with daytime highs around 10 to 15°C, nights near or below freezing in Dharamkot, and snow on the ridge after winter storms; Triund is often under snow and the forest department stops trekkers when conditions are unsafe. The Dalai Lama often holds teachings in Dharamshala in this period, which fills the town for a week at a time. Most homestays rely on blankets and heaters, so pack properly.
