McLeod Ganj Trip Cost from Delhi: Budget, Mid-Range and Premium

Quick summary

A McLeod Ganj trip from Delhi NCR costs about ₹5,500 per person on a tight budget, ₹8,000 mid-range and ₹22,000 for a premium self-drive trip, for three nights on the ridge. Once you are there it is one of the cheaper good mountain towns in India; the distance from Delhi is what pushes the total up. The tables below break each band into line items that add up to the total, so you can swap in your own numbers. For routes, seasons and places, see the McLeod Ganj destination guide.

Assumptions

  • Per person, two people travelling together and sharing a double room.
  • Three nights in McLeod Ganj (four days on the ground), plus the journey each way: overnight buses in the budget and mid-range plans, a self-drive car in the premium plan.
  • Normal-season weekday prices. Room rates rise sharply in May and June, during Dalai Lama teachings, at Christmas and New Year, and on long weekends, often by 30 to 60 percent or more.
  • Bus fares, room rates, food, fuel, scooter hire and activity prices are estimates rounded for planning. Check current fares on the HRTC booking site and current rates with operators before you go.
  • Fees that are verified: the Triund forest fee of ₹100 per head per day and ₹550 per tent for two including entry (Himachal Forest Department, January 2024 revision); Norbulingka Institute entry of about ₹50 for Indian visitors; the Himachal Pradesh entry tax of ₹170 for out-of-state cars from 1 April 2026; the ₹10 registration fee for Dalai Lama teachings. The Tsuglagkhang temple, the Tibet Museum, St John in the Wilderness, Bhagsu Nag temple, the waterfall path and Naddi are free.

Costs people forget

  • The shuttle up from Dharamshala if your bus terminates at the lower bus stand: a shared taxi is cheap, a private one is not.
  • Teaching-week surcharges on rooms.
  • Cafe creep in Dharamkot: coffee and cake twice a day adds ₹600 or more.
  • Donations at the temple, monasteries and meditation centres; Vipassana and Tushita courses run on donation but you will want to give.
  • Warm clothes if you arrive without them; nights are cold in every month.

Ways to keep it down

  • Take the HRTC bus; the drive is long and the bus is cheap. Compare fares with the fuel calculator before deciding to drive.
  • Stay in Dharamkot or Bhagsu guesthouses rather than the square or Naddi hotels.
  • Eat Tibetan for two meals a day.
  • Walk everything on the ridge; hire a scooter only for the valley day.
  • Do Triund as a day trip with your own snacks and water.
  • Travel in October, November, March or early April outside teaching dates.

Plug your own dates and group size into the trip budget calculator, use the best places guide to decide which paid sights you want, and the 2-day itinerary to see how the valley day fits. If you are adding Bir Billing for paragliding, budget a separate day and a tandem flight on top.
