Dalhousie Trip Cost from Delhi: Budget, Mid-Range and Premium

Quick summary

A Dalhousie trip from Delhi NCR costs about ₹5,000 per person on a tight budget, ₹8,500 mid-range and ₹21,500 for a premium self-drive trip. Dalhousie is cheaper to be in than Shimla or Manali and more expensive to reach, because it is 560 km away and the last 80 km from Pathankot need a taxi or bus, and because taxis fill the gap left by limited scooter hire once you are there. The tables below break each band into line items that add up to the total, so you can swap in your own numbers. For routes, seasons and what to see, start with the Dalhousie destination guide.

Assumptions

  • Per person, two people travelling together and sharing a double room.
  • The budget and mid-range plans cover two nights in Dalhousie with three days on the ground, travelling overnight both ways; the premium plan covers three nights with four days on the ground, driving up on Day 1 and back on Day 4.
  • Normal-season weekday prices. Room rates rise sharply from mid-May to June, over Christmas and New Year, on long weekends and after a snowfall.
  • Bus fares, train fares, taxi rates, room rates, food and fuel are estimates rounded for planning, based on fares listed on booking sites at the time of writing. Check current fares on the HRTC and IRCTC sites and rates with hotels before you go.
  • Fees that are verified: the Himachal Pradesh entry tax for out-of-state private cars (₹170 since 1 April 2026), the Bhuri Singh Museum ticket in Chamba (₹50 for Indian adults, ₹30 for children under 10, ₹100 for a camera), and the Kalatop sanctuary vehicle fee as last reported (₹250 per vehicle in 2020, free on foot; confirm at the barrier).

Reference prices

  • HRTC Delhi–Dalhousie: about ₹800 on the ordinary bus to about ₹2,200 on AC services, as listed on booking sites; 13 hours or a little more.
  • Train Delhi–Pathankot: sleeper to 3AC; the 14035 Dhauladhar Express leaves Delhi Sarai Rohilla at 23:20 and reaches Pathankot around 08:10 to 08:20 (three days a week on the current timetable). Check fares and running days on IRCTC.
  • Pathankot–Dalhousie: sedan taxi about ₹1,800, SUV about ₹2,800, 2.5 hours; HRTC bus roughly ₹210 to ₹310.
  • Himachal entry tax: ₹170 per out-of-state private car since 1 April 2026; Himachal-registered vehicles are exempt.
  • Kalatop sanctuary: per-vehicle fee at the Lakkar Mandi barrier, ₹250 as last reported in 2020; free on foot. Rest house rooms via the Divisional Forest Officer, Chamba; confirm the tariff when booking.
  • Bhuri Singh Museum, Chamba: ₹50 Indian adults, ₹30 children under 10, ₹100 camera; closed Mondays and gazetted holidays.
  • Free: Dainkund ridge walk, Khajjiar meadow and temple, St John's and St Francis churches, the Mall loop, the Bakrota circular road, Panchpula.
  • Khajjiar activities: horse rides, zorbing and the golf cart are priced on the spot and vary by season; none is needed to enjoy the meadow.

Costs people forget

  • The Pathankot transfer. It is 80 km of hill road each way and the single biggest cost after the stay if you take a private taxi both ways. Sharing a taxi up and taking the HRTC bus down saves roughly ₹650 per person.
  • Taxi union rates in town. Day-trip rates are fixed at the stand and do not negotiate much; three days of taxis without your own vehicle adds up.
  • Heating. Some hotels charge extra for heaters from November to March; ask when booking.
  • Peak-season rooms. Rates on Bakrota and at Khajjiar can double from mid-May to June and after a snowfall.
  • Cash. The Kalatop barrier, the rest house, Khajjiar tea stalls and most dhabas take cash; carry enough from the chowks.

Ways to keep it down

  • Take the overnight train to Pathankot and the HRTC bus up rather than a private taxi.
  • Use the HRTC bus to Khajjiar and walk the Kalatop track instead of hiring a half-day taxi; the forest is better on foot anyway.
  • Stay at the chowks or, if you can book it, at the Kalatop rest house, which is the cheapest good bed in the district.
  • Walk the Mall loop and Bakrota; they are free and the best of the town.
  • Eat at the Subhash Chowk dhabas and ask for madra and chukh.
  • Travel in March, April, October or November on a normal week rather than a long weekend; see the best time to visit Dalhousie.

Putting it together

A comfortable Dalhousie trip for a Delhi NCR couple by overnight train, with a mid-range hotel and shared taxis for Khajjiar, Kalatop and Dainkund, lands at about ₹8,500 per person for two nights.
