Best Places to Visit in Manali: 8 Spots and When to Go

Quick summary

Manali has more worth seeing than most hill towns, but the best-known places are crowded at the wrong hours. This list ranks the places to visit in Manali by how much they add to a short trip from Delhi NCR, with the time each one needs and the hour of day that makes it work. For background on the town, routes and seasons, start with the Manali destination guide.

Top picks at a glance

  • For a first visit: Old Manali, Hadimba Temple and Vashisht, all within 3 km of the Mall.
  • For one big day out: Sissu and the Atal Tunnel, leaving by 6 am.
  • For a short walk: Jogini Falls from Vashisht.
  • For history: Naggar Castle and the Roerich gallery.
  • For snow in summer: Rohtang Pass, on a vehicle permit, from May to November.

1. Old Manali

What it is: the original village on the hill across the Manalsu stream from the Mall, with stone-and-timber houses, orchards, guesthouses and cafes, and the Manu Temple at the top. Manali takes its name from the sage Manu, and the temple dedicated to him is one of very few in India.

Why go: it is the quietest, most walkable part of town and the best area to stay in.

Time needed: 2 to 3 hours to walk up through the village to the Manu Temple and back.

Tip: the lanes are steep and narrow; walk rather than drive. The old Manalsu bridge was washed away in the August 2025 floods and the PWD set up an interim Bailey bridge in its place, so expect slow traffic at the crossing.

2. Sissu and the Atal Tunnel

What it is: the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel under the Pir Panjal, opened in October 2020, with its south portal 25 km from Manali beyond Solang. The north portal opens near Sissu in the Lahaul valley, a wide, dry landscape along the Chandra river at around 3,000 metres.

Why go: it is the easiest way to see a high Himalayan valley on a day trip from Manali, and no permit is needed.

Time needed: half a day, leaving Manali by 6 am and returning by late morning.

Tip: the queue to the south portal builds by mid-morning on weekends and holidays. After fresh snow in winter, police often stop ordinary cars at Solang and allow only 4x4 vehicles towards the tunnel, so check the advisory before setting out.

3. Vashisht

What it is: a village about 3 km from Manali on the far side of the Beas, with temples to the sage Vashisht and to Rama, and sulphur hot springs piped into separate bathing tanks for men and women.

Why go: a hot-spring soak on a cold morning, plus a smaller and slower cafe scene than Old Manali.

Time needed: 1 to 2 hours, more if you add Jogini Falls.

Tip: go early in the morning or late afternoon when the baths are less crowded, and dress modestly; this is a working temple.

4. Jogini Falls

What it is: a waterfall of roughly 150 feet above Vashisht, reached on foot through orchards and pine forest, with a small Jogini Mata shrine near its base.

Why go: the best short walk near Manali, with valley views and no road traffic.

Time needed: about 3 to 4 hours return from Vashisht at an easy pace.

Tip: the last stretch is steeper and the rocks near the water are wet and slippery; wear shoes with grip and do not climb on the falls.

5. Hadimba Temple

What it is: a four-tiered wooden pagoda temple built in 1553 around a cave shrine, set in the Dhungri deodar forest above the Mall. It is dedicated to Hidimba, wife of Bhima in the Mahabharata. A shrine to her son Ghatotkacha stands about 70 metres away.

Why go: the carved wooden doorway and the cedar grove are the most distinctive architecture in Manali.

Time needed: 30 to 45 minutes.

Tip: arrive soon after it opens in the morning; by late morning the approach is crowded with queues, photo stalls and yak rides.

6. Solang Valley

What it is: a meadow 13 km north of Manali on the road to the Atal Tunnel, and the centre of Manali's adventure sports: paragliding, the ropeway, zorbing and quad bikes in summer, and skiing on the snow slopes in winter.

Why go: the most accessible place for snow and adventure activities, especially with children.

Time needed: 1 to 3 hours depending on activities.

Tip: paragliding and several other activities are suspended in Kullu district from 15 July to 15 September every monsoon. Fly only with pilots registered with the Himachal tourism department and confirm the price and flight length before you pay.

7. Naggar Castle

What it is: a castle of about 500 years, built by Raja Sidh Singh in Naggar, which served as the capital of Kullu until it moved to Sultanpur in 1660. It is now a small museum and a heritage hotel run by Himachal Tourism, about 22 km from Manali on the left bank of the Beas.

Why go: traditional stone-and-timber architecture, valley views from the terrace, and the Nicholas Roerich art gallery and house a short climb above.

Time needed: half a day including the Roerich estate.

Tip: the Roerich gallery is closed on Mondays and national holidays; it opens 10 am to 6 pm from April to October and 10 am to 5 pm from November to March, with tickets at ₹100 for Indian visitors. Check the castle museum's ticket and hours at the gate.

8. Rohtang Pass

What it is: the 3,980 m pass 51 km from Manali on the old road to Lahaul.

Why go: snow fields and high mountain views from late spring to autumn, when the town itself has none.

Time needed: a full morning, starting early.

Tip: every vehicle crossing the Gulaba barrier needs an online permit from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in: ₹550 per car including the congestion charge, 1,200 vehicles a day, bookable only for the next two days, vehicles under 10 years old. The pass usually opens in May and closes with heavy snow around late November. In 2026 the road was announced closed on Tuesdays for maintenance, so check before booking a Tuesday.

What to skip or time carefully

  • Hadimba Temple and Solang Valley after 10 am on weekends in May and June.
  • The tunnel road after 8 am on weekends and holidays.
  • Rohtang Pass if you have already done Sissu and are short on time; both show you high mountains, but only Rohtang needs a permit.
  • Riverbank photo stops on the Beas, which is fast and cold in every season.

Plan the trip

Check the best time to visit Manali before you book, since Rohtang, Solang activities and the tunnel road all depend on the season. To fit these places into a weekend, follow the 2-day Manali itinerary, and see the Manali trip cost guide for budgets. If you are extending to a longer Himachal loop, Shimla fits on the way, and the trip planner can map the route.
