The best months for Shimla and Manali together, a month-by-month table for both, and a six-day plan to do the two on one road trip.
Quick summary
Shimla and Manali are often visited on the same trip, but their best seasons are not quite the same. Shimla is closer to Delhi and a little lower; Manali is higher up a narrow valley, colder in winter and more exposed to monsoon landslides. In short, the best time to visit Shimla and Manali together is March to May and October to November, with January and February if you want snow and can handle the cold.

Best time for each kind of trip
- Best overall: October and the first half of November. Clear skies, mountain views, no rain and smaller crowds than summer.
- Best for snow: mid-January to mid-February. Shimla gets most of its snow in these weeks, and Solang Valley near Manali is the most reliable snow in the region. See snowfall in Shimla and Manali in December.
- Best for escaping Delhi's heat: April to June. Expect crowds and higher prices, especially in late May and June.
- Best with families and older parents: April, May and October, when days are comfortable and roads are dry.
- Time to avoid: July and August. Landslides close the Kalka–Shimla road and the Mandi–Kullu stretch of the Manali highway most years.
Doing Shimla and Manali in one trip
Shimla to Manali is a full day's drive through Mandi. The classic order from Delhi is Shimla first and Manali second, then straight back to Delhi from Manali:
- Day 1: Delhi to Shimla (about 8 hours).
- Day 2: Shimla: the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhu and Kufri.
- Day 3: Shimla to Manali via Mandi (a long driving day).
- Days 4–5: Manali: Old Manali, Vashisht, Hadimba, Solang or the Atal Tunnel.
- Day 6: Manali to Delhi (12–13 hours, or break it at Mandi or Chandigarh).
Six days is the minimum for both without rushing; seven is better. The trip planner can build this as a road trip with Manali added as a second stop, splitting the days and showing the weather for each stop on your dates.

Weather by season
- Spring (March–April): cool days and cold nights; snow lingers on the peaks and higher roads. Few crowds.
- Summer (May–June): the warmest and busiest months. Comfortable days in both towns, but traffic jams on weekends and higher hotel prices.
- Monsoon (July–September): heavy rain, cloud and landslides. Views are poor and road closures are common, especially between Mandi and Manali.
- Autumn (October–November): dry, clear and cool; the best views of the year and moderate crowds outside the Diwali and Dussehra holidays.
- Winter (December–February): cold days, freezing nights and snow from late December to February. Manali is colder and snowier than Shimla.
Crowds and prices
Both towns are busiest from mid-May to June, over Diwali and the long weekends of October and November, and between Christmas and New Year. Hotel prices rise sharply in these weeks and the roads up from the plains slow down, especially on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. For lower prices and quieter towns, aim for March, the first half of October, or weekdays in early December.
If you are travelling with older parents or young children, April and October are the most comfortable months: no snow on the roads, no monsoon risk, and mild temperatures for walking.
Shimla or Manali first?
From Delhi, Shimla first is the natural order: it is closer, so the first day's drive is shorter, and you finish in Manali, the higher and more dramatic of the two. The drive back from Manali is long, so either leave very early or break it at Mandi or Chandigarh.
