When it snows in Shimla, where around Shimla you are most likely to see snow, and how to plan a winter trip around road closures and crowds.
Quick summary
Snowfall in Shimla is real, but it is shorter and later than most people expect. The town gets most of its snow in January and February, December is usually dry, and in some recent winters the first proper snowfall has not come until January. This guide covers when it snows in Shimla, where around Shimla you are most likely to see it, and how to plan a trip so that you are not stuck in a traffic jam on a road that has been closed by snow.
When does it snow in Shimla?
Shimla's snow season effectively runs from the last week of December to the third week of February. India Meteorological Department climate data for Shimla puts the average snowfall at roughly a metre a year, with January and February together accounting for the large majority of it. December averages only a few centimetres, spread over one or two days.
| Month | Chance of snow in Shimla town | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| November | Very low | Clear, cold, the best views of the year. Snow is rare. |
| December | Low | Cold and mostly dry. A light spell is possible in the last week. |
| January | Highest | The peak month. Several snowy days in a typical year. |
| February | High | Snow continues into the third week, then tapers off. |
| March | Low | Occasional late flurries; snow lingers higher up at Kufri and Narkanda. |
If seeing snow is the main reason for the trip, aim for mid-January to mid-February. In December 2024 Shimla had its season's first snowfall in early December, which local reports called the first such early snowfall since the 1990s. It shows that early snow can happen but should not be planned on.
Where to see snow around Shimla
Shimla town sits at about 2,200 m. Places higher up get more snow and keep it longer, which is why many visitors who "see snow in Shimla" actually see it a few kilometres away.
- The Ridge and Mall Road: the classic snowy-Shimla photos, but only on the days it actually snows in town, and the snow turns to slush quickly with the crowds.
- Kufri (2,720 m, about 16 km): the most reliable snow near Shimla in January and February, with snow play areas. It is crowded on weekends.
- Narkanda (about 60 km): higher and colder, with ski slopes at Hatu when the snow is deep enough. Quieter than Kufri.
- Mashobra and Naldehra: forested ridges near town that hold snow longer than the Mall.
How to plan a snow trip to Shimla
- Keep your dates flexible. Watch the forecast a week out and book refundable stays if you can. Snow usually arrives with a western disturbance, and IMD issues warnings a few days ahead.
- Plan two or three nights. A single night gives you one chance; three give you a real one.
- Expect closed roads after heavy snow. Police often stop traffic beyond Dhalli towards Kufri and Narkanda until the road is cleared. Do not drive on snow without chains or experience; local taxis are usually the safer option.
- Go on weekdays. A snowfall on a weekend brings long jams on the Kalka–Shimla road and at Kufri.
- Pack properly. Waterproof shoes with grip, thermal layers, gloves and a cap matter more than a heavy jacket.

If there is no snow
A dry winter week in Shimla is still worth it. The air is clear, the Himalayan views from Jakhu and the Ridge are at their best, and hotels are cheaper than in summer, except over Christmas and New Year. If snow is the priority and Shimla is dry, Manali's Solang Valley usually has snow when Shimla does not; see Manali in December.
A three-day snow plan for Shimla
- Day 1: drive up from Delhi (about 8 hours) or take the train to Kalka and the toy train to Shimla. Evening on the Ridge and Mall Road.
- Day 2: if snow has fallen in the last day or two, go to Kufri early, before the crowds and before the police close the road for traffic. If the town is snowy, walk up to Jakhu Temple for the view.
- Day 3: Mashobra or Naldehra in the morning, then head back, leaving Shimla by noon to clear the hill section in daylight.
If the forecast shows fresh snow later in the week, it is often better to shift the whole trip by a few days than to arrive on a dry spell and hope.
Where to stay for a snow trip
- Near the Mall and the Ridge: the most convenient base, because you can walk to everything when roads are closed and cars cannot move.
- Kufri and Mashobra: more snow and quieter, but you depend on the road into town, which can be shut after heavy snowfall.
- Narkanda: the best choice if snow is the whole point and you do not need Shimla town.
Whichever you choose, ask the hotel about heating, parking and whether it is reachable by car after snowfall, as some hillside properties are a walk from the nearest road.
Getting to Shimla in winter without driving
If you would rather not drive on snow, take a train from Delhi to Kalka and continue on the Kalka–Shimla toy train, which runs through the winter, or take an HRTC Volvo bus overnight from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Inside Shimla, local taxis with experienced drivers are the safest way to reach Kufri after snow.
