Where to Stay in Shimla: 6 Best Areas Compared

Quick summary

For most first trips, stay on or near the Mall Road and the Ridge, where the main sights, cafés and walks are on foot, as long as you are happy to park once and walk. If you are driving from Delhi with family or heavy luggage, Chhota Shimla, the Cart Road belt near the Lift or a drive-in property at Shoghi or Mashobra will save you daily parking trouble. This guide compares six areas, typical room prices and how each one works with a car. When you have chosen, compare live hotel prices in Shimla for your dates.

These are typical 2025–2026 rates for a double room outside peak weekends. Prices climb in May and June, at Christmas and New Year and on snow days, and rooms near the Ridge usually fill first. Check live rates before you book.

Mall Road and the Ridge

The Mall and the Ridge are the heart of colonial Shimla: Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, Scandal Point and the walk towards Jakhu are all on foot. Heritage hotels and mid-range properties sit along and just above the Mall.

Who it suits: first-time visitors, couples, and anyone arriving by the Kalka–Shimla toy train or by bus with light luggage.

Downsides: this is the most expensive area for the room you get, and the Mall is crowded in the evenings in season. "Close to the Mall" on a booking site can still mean a steep climb.

By car: the Mall and most of the Ridge are sealed roads, closed to vehicles except emergency traffic, and the roads leading up from the Cart Road are restricted. Private vehicles need a permit from the Deputy Commissioner's office for restricted roads (a temporary permit costs ₹100 a day), and in April 2026 the state raised fines to as much as ₹15,000 for driving on a sealed road. In practice, you park at the Lift parking or another public lot, take the Lift up, and walk or use a porter for bags. A few central hotels run their own lift or shuttle from a parking point; ask before booking.

Lakkar Bazaar and around

Lakkar Bazaar, the wood-craft market just beyond the Ridge, has budget hotels and guesthouses within a short walk of the centre.

Who it suits: budget travellers and young groups who want to be on foot near the Ridge without Mall Road prices.

Downsides: rooms are often small and views vary a lot; check whether the room faces the valley or the lane. The same car restrictions apply as on the Mall.

By car: park in a public lot and walk; do not plan on driving to the door.

Cart Road, the Lift and Old Bus Stand

The Cart Road runs below the Mall, with the Lift, the Old Bus Stand and the railway station along it. Hotels here are on the road network, so a car or taxi can reach them, and the public Lift run by HP tourism connects the Cart Road to the Mall.

Who it suits: drivers who still want to be close to the centre, late arrivals and early departures.

Downsides: traffic noise, little character and steep climbs if the Lift is busy or closed. Parking along the Cart Road itself is prohibited.

By car: the Lift parking holds roughly 800 vehicles, and other public lots include ISBT Tutikandi, the High Court, the railway station and the Old Bus Stand. They fill up on peak days, so arrive early or ask the hotel about its own spaces.

Chhota Shimla and Kasumpti

Chhota Shimla lies at the eastern end of the Mall, roughly 1–2 km from the centre, around the state secretariat, with Kasumpti beyond it. It is residential and calmer than the core, with hotels and homestays on the road network.

Who it suits: families driving from Delhi, older travellers who need a car at the door, and longer stays.

Downsides: evenings on the Mall mean a taxi, a bus or a walk with some climbs back. Fewer restaurants nearby.

By car: much easier than the centre, with a public parking lot at Chhota Shimla. Confirm whether the hotel's parking is its own or a public lot nearby.

Summer Hill, Chaura Maidan and Boileauganj

The western side of town runs from Chaura Maidan past the Viceregal Lodge to Summer Hill and Boileauganj, about 2–3 km from the Mall. It is leafy and quieter, with shaded walks and a few heritage properties.

Who it suits: couples and slow travellers, history lovers visiting the Viceregal Lodge, and older travellers who prefer a level road to the door.

Downsides: far enough from the Ridge that evenings out need transport, and limited choice of hotels.

By car: road access is generally easier than in the centre, though individual approaches vary. Check the exact drop point.

Shoghi and Mashobra

Shoghi sits on the Kalka–Shimla highway roughly 10 km before town, so it is the first area you reach from Delhi. Mashobra, about 11–12 km beyond Shimla, is forest and orchard country with resorts and larger properties, and Naldehra and Kufri lie further out.

Who it suits: drivers who want on-site parking, couples looking for a quiet resort, and groups who plan to spend time at the property.

Downsides: every trip into Shimla needs a car or taxi, and town traffic can stretch a short transfer. Restaurants and shops are limited nearby.

By car: the easiest choice. Shoghi avoids town traffic on arrival and departure; Mashobra suits day trips towards Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda.

Best area for…

  • Families: Chhota Shimla or Chaura Maidan for road access; the Mall only if luggage is light and everyone is happy to walk.
  • Couples: the Mall for heritage evenings, or Mashobra for a forest resort.
  • Budget and backpackers: Lakkar Bazaar or the Cart Road belt.
  • First-timers: Mall Road and the Ridge, or near the Lift.
  • Travelling by car: Shoghi, Mashobra or Chhota Shimla. Avoid central hotels that cannot confirm parking.
  • Snow (January–February): Mashobra or Kufri side for snow nearby, but check that the road and the property's approach are cleared.

Season notes that change where to stay

  • Peak season (May–June, Christmas–New Year, long weekends): central rooms sell out first and parking lots fill by mid-morning. Weekend queues near Parwanoo are common, so arrive early.
  • Monsoon (July–September): landslides can close the highway and the toy train line for days. Choose a property with a reliable road approach and keep a buffer day.
  • Winter (December–February): snow in Shimla now falls mostly in January and February and is not guaranteed in town. Ask about room heating, hot water and power backup, and avoid steep, icy approaches if you are driving.

Driving from Delhi

The drive via Ambala, Kalka and Parwanoo takes about 8 hours; see Delhi to Shimla by road for the route. Cars registered outside Himachal pay the state entry tax at the border (₹170 for a car from April 2026). Before booking, ask where the car will stop, whether parking is the hotel's own and how many steps lie between the car and your room.

FAQs

Which is the best area to stay in Shimla for the first time?

Mall Road and the Ridge, or close to the Lift. Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, Lakkar Bazaar and the Jakhu walk are all on foot, but you will need to park in a public lot and walk to the hotel.

Can you drive to hotels on Mall Road in Shimla?

Generally no. The Mall and the Ridge are sealed roads, and the approach roads are restricted and need a permit. Park at the Lift parking or another public lot and take the Lift up, unless the hotel confirms its own lift or shuttle.

Where to stay in Shimla with a car?

Shoghi, Mashobra and Chhota Shimla have the most properties with road access and parking. Shoghi is the first area on the highway from Delhi and avoids town traffic.

Is it better to stay in Shimla or Mashobra?

Stay in Shimla for walkable sightseeing and evenings on the Mall. Stay in Mashobra, about 11–12 km away, for a quiet forest resort with parking, accepting a drive each time you go into town.

Where to stay in Shimla for snow?

In January and February, Mashobra and the Kufri side are higher and nearer to the snow. After heavy snowfall, roads can close or ice over, so confirm access with the property before driving up.
